Welcome to That House Life!

Hi! I’m Tara and welcome to That House Life, a place to find honest and simplified information on finding and creating an authentic home.

There is so much information out there about making a home. Pinterest, Facebook, professional blogs. They all have tons of beautiful, carefully curated images and articles that show perfect homes and how you too can get that magazine ready look. This blog is not that.

Housekeeping, homemaking, and finding a home are hard. They take time, effort, and sometimes more money than we’ve got available. Also, I don’t know about everyone else, but trying to have perfect carpets and white furniture while living with a husband and a dog are just not possible in my house. I can’t imagine trying to do that with kids too.

So, this blog is about how things really work. Projects don’t always turn out the way I think they will. Stains and dirty floors happen. Our towels don’t all match and the bathroom vanities are straight out of the 80’s. Our basement is a dark mess, our master bedroom is where we actually sleep and it shows.

But this home is ours, and I’m making every effort to make it comfortable and work for how we live. This blog will show you how to do the same for your home! I believe homemaking can be fun and rewarding if you keep it simple and keep in mind what actually works for the people living in your house.

I’m really happy you are here! I hope you find something useful, or at the very least entertaining

We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

There may also be links to products in posts from other third-party websites. If you click the link and make a purchase, I will receive a small commission at no cost to you.

Sponsored Posts

There may occasionally be a post that is a sponsored review of a product that I have been paid to write or where the product was provided to me at no charge in exchange for my review. In these cases, all opinions are my own. I will not recommend a product that I would not use.

I’d also like to state what is probably already obvious: I’m not a professional real estate agent, lawyer, investor, contractor, banker, electrician, plumber, or designer. In fact, my only professional credential is pastries (I was a baker/ pastry chef in another life), so please, please, please, consult a professional in whatever field you are researching before making any commitments, especially with your money. This blog is meant to be a resource, hopefully an entertaining one, and while there is a lot of great info here, it’s not meant to be a replacement for professional guidance.

An At Home Yoga Studio On a Budget!

I love yoga. I'm not very good at it, and I'm not a professional in any way, but it's one of my favorite things to do. Unfortunately, I'm also on a pretty tight budget, so classes aren't an option for me right now. Also because of that budget, I don't have oodles of...

Thrift Store Finds #2 – Secondhand lamps and more

After my rant about the used market here in CO Springs, you would think thrift store finds never happen for me. That's actually not the case! Check out the first post of things I found here. While I may be having trouble finding actual furniture at thrift stores or on...

DIY Cleaners – A list of favorites to save you money!

Cleaning products are my least favorite things to shop for. All the scary chemicals I can't pronounce, the harsh smells that give me a headache, the absurd prices. I'd had quite enough of all this, so I Googled DIY cleaning products and haven't looked back. DIY...

Houseplants? More Like Yoga-Plants!

Houseplants. That word reminds me of house slippers or house dress. Like houseplants are the accessories you don't take out in public because they are comfortable but a bit embarrassing; easy going and low maintenance and you don't want anyone to see them. I think we...

Rust-Oleum Rocksolid Garage Floor Coating Review

The Used Furniture Project – Part 2

This post is the second in a series about used furniture and how I’m planning to furnish our new home. You can read the first post here. The project is not going as well as I'd hoped. First, the good: I found this adorable nightstand at one of our local Goodwill...

Thrift Store Finds #1 – Canisters and Organizers!

Hi Guys! This is the first in a series about things I find at my local thrift store. (A separate series about used furniture starts here). I know there are lots of these "haul" blog posts out there, but I find that my experience with thrift store finds is much...

5 Ways to Make A Long Hotel Stay Easier

When you are moving or remodeling a home, staying in a hotel for an extended stay is sometimes the only option. Recently, SJ and I stayed at a Marriot in Colorado Springs for 41 nights (I was counting) while we waited for our old house to complete it's sale and for...
